News archive - Event Announcement: "The Balkans in Europe: containment or transformation?"

The European Policy Centre, in cooperation with the King Baudouin Foundation and in association with the Institute for Strategic Studies in Ljubljana, invites you to a Policy Dialogue on The Balkans in Europe: containment or transformation?, on June 17, 2008.

In view of the crucial importance of the Balkans, last year the EPC and its strategic partner, the King Baudouin Foundation, decided to put together a Task Force of international experts to reassess the Union's overall policy towards the region. This has led to the EPC Working Paper "The Balkans in Europe: containment or transformation?" Twelve ideas for action, whose key theme is whether the EU's existing policies are really capable of moving forward from containing the security risks in the Balkans, also through 'protectorates', onto the path of 'Europeanisation'. The Paper puts forward twelve policy recommendations directed both to the EU and the Balkan countries.

The Working Paper will be introduced by Rosa Balfour, EPC Senior Policy Analyst, and will then be assessed and discussed by a panel, including Jelica Minic, Deputy Secretary General of the Regional Cooperation Council in Sarajevo, Dragana Radulovic, Deputy Foreign Minister for EU and NATO of the Republic of Montenegro, and Ivan Vejvoda, President of the Balkan Trust for Democracy in Belgrade. The Dialogue will be chaired by Graham Avery, EPC Senior Adviser.
