News archive - Project Final Reporting: Rural Sustainable Development through Integration of Renewable Energy Technologies

The results and achievements of the the RES-Integration Project (Rural sustainable development through integration of Renewable Energy Technologies), that ran from November 2004 to October 2007, are at your disposal and invite you to take a closer look.
The project is a cooperation project with the WBC region and was supported by the 6th Framework Programme of the European Commission.
Target regions were identified in Greece, Serbia and Montenegro, FYR of Macedonia, Albania, Italy and Germany/Austria.

Project Objectives:

The EU funded project RES-INTEGRATION strives to implement innovative and low cost Renewable Energy Systems (RES) and Energy Saving Technologies for sustainable development of selected disadvantaged rural regions of Europe.
To significantly increase there the share of renewable energy sources, has mutual beneficial effects for job creation, CO2 mitigation and others.
The focus lies on locally available resources, such as biomass, wind, hydro, photovoltaic, solar thermal or geothermal energy. Furthermore, the region’s
own resources in respect of know-how, financial power and labour force are used. The overall goal is to cover 100 % of the regions’ energy demand by renewable and locally available sources.

Target Regions:

All regions are located in rural, remote and disadvantaged areas.

  • Greece: Milos Island, Cyclades Islands
  • Germany/Austria: Achental, Bavaria/ Leukental, Tyrol
  • Italy: Mountain Community of Limina, Calabria
  • Serbia and Montenegro: Kragujevac-Knic Region
  • FYR of Macedonia: Podbelasica Region
  • Albania: Bregu Region

Project Results:

  • A common methodology for the integrated investigation of the regions’ energy demands.
  • DOIRES (The Software for the definition of the optimum combination of
  • Integrated Renewable Energy Systems (IRES)) Software Model for defining the optimum local combination of RE technologies according to the specific conditions, needs and particularities of the selected regions.
  • Analyses of the socio-economic and environmental impacts of the defined IRES for each region.
  • Integration of project results into existing and planned international aid and development schemes for each region.
