Montenegro is currently a candidate country to the EU with 3 provisionally closed chapters and 32 opened ones.

The EU is the largest provider of financial assistance to Montenegro spending

  • €504.9 million in EU pre-accession funds 2007-2020
  • €782 million provided in European Investment Bank loans since 1999
  • €172.9 million provided since 2009 in Western Balkans Investment Framework grants, leveraging investments of estimated €1.6 billion
  • €15.3 million for inclusive quality education and employment 2015-2017.

When it comes to the performance of Montenegrin RTDI organisations in H2020, 236 organisations (one organisation participating in N proposals is counted N times) applied for the Horizon 2020 grants with 14% success rate. In total, 47 organisations were involved in 29 grant agreements in total.

Net EU contribution awarded to Montenegrin organisations was EUR 2.94 mio. Montenegro is ranked 12 (out of 16 Associated Countries), when it comes to participation level, and 15 (out of 16 Associated Countries) when it comes to budget share.

There were 4 organisations funded under Marie Sklodowska-Curie actions (one organisation participating in N proposals is counted N times) .
