Competence Framework ‘Science for Policy’ for researchers

The Joint Research Centre of the European Commission published an overview of a distinct set of ‘Science4Policy’ competences, which are needed to achieve policy impact but which are rarely covered by scientists' formal university education and doctoral programmes. These ‘Science4Policy’ competences are essential to increase the impact of scientific knowledge for better policies. Possessing these competences, empowers researchers/research organisations to ensure that the most useful and robust facts are provided and understood in good time to be considered by policymakers throughout the policy cycle.

The JRC has mapped these competences in the ‘Science4Policy’ Competence Framework consisting of 5 competence clusters (A-E, see visual below). Each of these are made up of 3-7 competences (1-27, see visual below), which together constitutes the building blocks of ‘Science4Policy’ as a competence. The framework develops the competences along a 4-level progression model from foundational to expert level.

The website https://knowledge4policy.ec.europa.eu/visualisation/competence-framework-%E2%80%98science-policy%E2%80%99-researchers_en offers the possibility to navigate and explore the competence framework, tarting at an overview of the 5 competence clusters (A-E), the framework will ‘unfold´ and provide information on several levels of detail.
