[Call Announcement] Lauch of Synchrotron Radiation Training & Internship Programmes for the Western Balkans by Elettra (March 2020)

Elettra Syncrotrone Trieste announced the launch of two pilot actions for Western Balkans: the PhD fellowship opportunities as well as the postdoctoral fellowship opportunities in synchrotron radiation techniques and applications. The announcement was done at recent Ministerial meeting of the Western Balkans Steering Platform on Research and Innovation. Find more information on both programmes below. It is expected that programmes will start in March 2020.

SYRTEP - PhD fellowship opportunities in synchrotron radiation techniques and applications

Through its Synchrotron Radiation Training Educational Programme for the Western Balkans (SYRTEP-WB), Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.p.A., offers fellowships to PhD students from Western Balkan countries in the fields of materials science and engineering or in the life sciences.

SYRTEP's goal is to strengthen the scientific capability of young scientists and researchers from Western Balkan countries to better contribute and serve the scientific, technical, and economic development of their home countries. SYRTEP fellowships enrich their doctoral studies by giving students access to Elettra's international community and world-class research and training facilities.

With a SYRTEP fellowship, PhD students study at their home universities but have the financial support to visit Elettra for a three- to six-month stay each year for up to three successive years. Fellows work on their PhD theses with their advisors at their home institutes and co-advisors at Elettra. Their PhD is awarded at their home institutes.

Fellowships are awarded based on the merit of a thesis project proposed by students and their home country advisors and endorsed by the relevant Research Ministry of the country of the applicant. The SYRTEP fellow is assigned to a designated co-advisor at Elettra.

SYRIP  - Postdoctoral fellowship opportunities in synchrotron radiation techniques and applications

Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.p.A. has established a postdoctoral fellowship scheme for training young scientists from Western Balkan Countries in the application of synchrotron radiation techniques in materials science and engineering, physics, chemistry and in the life sciences. The main motivation for creating the Elettra Synchrotron Radiation Internship Program for the Western Balkans (SYRIP-WB) was the absence of state-of-the-art synchrotron radiation facilities in the Western Balkans and increasing demand from many scientists from  Western Balkan countries to have advanced experimental training in this area to fully exploit the opportunities offered by the many advanced facilities throughout Europe open to external users trough merit-based peer-review.

An additional purpose of the SYRIP-WB programme is the to promote the development of collaborations between the European synchrotron scientific community and individuals, groups, and institutions in Western Balkan countries.  The main objective remains to stimulate the formation of a high-level user base in the Western Balkan countries that can participate in the exploitation of the new science facilities being developed throughout Europe.

In practice, the SYRIP Programme will offer young scientists from Western Balkans the opportunity of broadening and strengthening their experience by joining ongoing research at Elettra. The type of research experience varies from basic studies to industrial projects. In general, research visits last from a minimum of six months to a maximum of three years.

Fellowships will be awarded based on the merit of the curriculum vitae of the applicant and on the endorsement by the relevant Research Ministry of the country of the applicant. Every SYRIP fellow will be assigned to a designated research advisor at Elettra.
